sewWHAT is being held on Saturday June 27th 2009
Sew What?! is a fashion, art, shopping event featuring a Swap-o-rama-rama. The event will include vendors which produce handmade jewelry, accessories, clothing and home goods. Artists will be performing live during the event with an opportunity for the public to receive custom art. This event will also include a Swap-o-rama-rama which is a community clothing swap and do-it-yourself workshop in which attendees explore creative reuse through the recycling of used clothing.

Public Transportation:

Bus 91 or 86 from Sullivan Station.

Bus 91 from Central Square.

Bus 86 from Harvard Square.

Bus 87 from Davis Square.

Bus 87 from Lechemere Station.


Driving directions:

From Davis Square:

Take Somerville Ave. straight into Union Square. At the major intersection (India Palace on your right), turn left to stay on Somerville Ave. At the next set of lights (Dunkin' Donuts on your right, turn left. Take a quick left  and you will see a parking lot  for Central Plaza.

 

From Back Bay via Central Square:

Take Mass Ave. across the Harvard Bridge and into Central Square.  In Central Square turn right onto Prospect Street (Starbuck's on your right) Take Prospect Street through Inman Square, and over the bridge (where it becomes one way). Pass straight through the intersection (Dunkin's Donuts on the left). The road will start to bear right, but you should not. Turn left  and you will see a parking lot  for Central Plaza.

 

From the North:

Take I-93 South to exit 30 (Route 38-S). Head toward Route 29/Somerville. Turn left onto Mystic Ave (Route 38-s) for 3/4 miles. Turn slight right onto McGrath Highway (Route 38-S). Stay straight to go onto McGrath Highway/Medford Street past a railroad bridge. When you see a Sunoco Gas Station on your right, bear right down the off ramp. Turn right onto Washington Street. You'll pass the Somerville Police station (on the left), Ricky's Flower Shop (on the left). The road will curve left, but you should not, but rather drive straight, and you will see a parking lot  for Central Plaza.

 

From the South:

Take I-93 North through Boston to Exit 28 (Route 99/Sullivan Square/Somerville). Turn left onto Cambridge Street. Cambridge Street becomes Washington Street. You'll pass Holiday Inn (on your left), the Somerville Police station (on your left), Ricky's Flower Shop (on the left). The road will curve left, but you should not, but rather drive straight, and you will see a parking lot  for Central Plaza.

 

From the West/Mass Pike:

Take the Mass Pike.I-90 to Exit 18 (Allston/Cambridge). Bear right, follow signs to Cambridge/Somerville. Pass over the Charles River bridge and merge onto Cambridge Street. Cambridge Street becomes River Street. River Street becomes Western Ave. As you pass through Central Square, Western Ave. becomes Prospect Street. Take Prospect Street through Inman Square, and over the bridge (where it becomes one way). Pass straight through the intersection (Dunkin's Donuts on the left). The road will start to bear right, but you should not,  Turn left  and you will see a parking lot  for Central Plaza.

SWAP O RAMA RAMA


Clothing swap and do-it-yourself workshop in which a community explores creative reuse through the recycling of used clothing. Free for the public to participate, bring unwanted clothing/accessories. Sewing machines and notions will be available to alter items on-site

Why Swap
Swap-O-Rama-Rama utilizes the existing surplus of clothing to create new-recycled goods. In d.i.y spirit, through workshops and the collectivizing of ideas, it helps each individual break down the barrier between consumer and creator while inviting all to reclaim the creativity that has been lost to industry.Left over clothing will be donated to Second Chances www.secondchances.org

What to Expect
The Swap: When you attend the swap bring any amount of unwanted clothing. Every swap begins with a giant collective pile of clothing, the unwanted clothing of all who attend. Everyone is welcome to dive in and find their next new/used items from the pile. Ideas of what to bring...clothes you bought and never wore, tragic shopping mistakes, well worn and loved items that have exceeded their stay in the closet, unloved gifts that you held on to out of obligation.

DIY Stations
After you have chosen your new clothes slide on over to one of the sewing stations.The Sewing and Vacuum Center in Somerville
